Whats the general consensus on these now? I’m seeing CPO Jetta sport wagons running in the 9-11k range and CPO Passats running in the 10-12k range which seems low for anything that is CPO . Is it just the stigma against the cars or are they just liabilities to own at this point?

I bought a CPO TDI Sportwagen a year and a half ago just after they started fixing them and love it. I paid $12k for mine and it was optioned exactly how I would have wanted it.

Diesel cars are kind of a pain to own as filling them up isn’t always easy. Here about 1/4 of the gas stations supply diesel and some of them that do have the older style giant truck nozzle which doesn’t fit.

Outside of that, it has been a dream to own with zero issues, great gas mileage, very comfortable and the perfect size for me.

The price is a bit low for a CPO, but the newest of them are 6 years old at this point which age wise prices them fairly high.  They’re just low mileage used CPO cars and I think a great buy.

My 2012 JSW that's been in my family since it was new hasn't had any issues since. Quite a few people here bought post dieselgate TDIs and I don't recall them having any issues.

Would carrying a jerrycan help?

Most people don’t think about Dieselgate I’d guess. Most people wouldn’t even know they’re diesel unless you told them. They’re not slow, clattery, or smokey. If you don’t mind the history, pick one up. With a few thousand dollars of bolt ons (which I recognize is a lot) and if you don’t really care about the emissions, you can delete EGR, DPF, and a few other things, get a big turbo and flash, and have 250+ hp while still getting 45 MPG.

Had a Jetta, gave it back to VW as soon as they started taking the cars back. Had no problems with the car and the torque was great, the only dow n side is the cost of diesel is considerably higher than regular gas.  Make sure you inspect the car carefully, VW was taking them back with a fair bit of damage as owners stripped the car before returning them.

I had one, but cashed out. For the JSW i presume that if its the current generation for it to be CPO and it has the DEF tank . I dumped my 2013 JSW as it was the one without the DEF tank and at the time they weren’t sure if they would be able to make it comply and if they could what it would do to driving performance.

I think the Passats even of the older generation had the DEF tank but I could be wrong.

Only a couple of times when I was road tripping did I run into the diesel nozzle issue but that was mostly rural stations with older pumps, even though they were BP and Exxon stations respectively.  I always made it a point to find a Marathon, Sheetz, Wawa or whatever along my trip that carried diesel.

It would, but then I’d have to carry around a gas can in my car which would make the inside smell like gas.

I’ve seen funnel adapters for this as well but then you have the same problem of having something that smells like diesel in your car...

Kind of pricey for what you get. They’re painfully outdated compared to newer VW models.

I got a CPO ‘15 Golf TDI S with a 5 spd manual last year . Fun to drive, fuel economy is fantastic. I’ve had to take it to the dealer once for leaking DEF lines but it was covered under warranty. They have pretty solid warranties, especially for anything to do with emissions.

A friend of mine got a ‘15 sportwagon and then a ‘14 (?) Passatt. My brother in- law got a ‘12 TDI golf wagon (non-CPO). And my uncle out in Texas got, I think, a ‘15 TDI wagon.

I don’t think that’s low for a 5 -10 year old VW. The warranty is a big bonus, though— it’s unusual to be able to buy a car that old essentially CPO.

I bought a 14 passat highline sport for 13k in canadianistan pounds sterling . Love it. Dieselgate is my Waterloo. Er I mean my Pearl Harbour. Um, charge of the light brigade? I'm no good at this using one thing that happened as a comparison for my situation. There should be a word for that...

My brother in law, and father in law both bought post dieselgate Jettas. And the only problem they’ve had was a leaky exhaust gasket on my BIL’s wagon which was fixed by the dealership, it was obviously their fault because it was caused by improper installation of the DEF system components.

That said some of these cars have been sitting for a longtime  now. I was Shocked to see how much inventory was still sitting on the lots last one I was in Duluth

I absolutely love my 2011 JSW TDI that I bought CPO for $10,500 last year and couldn’t have asked for a better car! It was the perfect car for a 12 day 6k mile trip across the US and down into Mexico . It’s been pretty reliable (AC broke, one bad sway bar, and a new head unit all fixed under warranty) Considering the 2 year unlimited mile bumper to bumper CPO warranty and the 10 year 120k emissions warranty, I really don’t think you can find a better CPO value.
